How To Make Organic Bone Broth

If you are wondering how to make organic bone broth, look no further.  Bone broth has a tremendous amount of health benefits.  Bone broth can be added into anyone's nutrition plan very easily.  A typical cup of bone broth will contain approximately 8-13 grams of protein per cup.  Read below to get started.

 

How To Make Organic Bone Broth - Chicken Recipe

Ingredients:

2 organic whole chickens--cut into pieces  (use chicken necks but not organ meat)

4 bay leaves

garlic powder to taste

onion powder to taste

1-2 Whole lemons, quartered or

4 TBSP organic apple cider vinegar (Braggs is good)

4-8 peppercorns, whole

1-2 tsp sea salt or Himalayan salt—to taste

clean water:  enough to fill soup pots or crockpots approximately ¾ full, plus extra in reserve to add during cooking

 

Equipment:

large soup pot or 2 medium large/ or 2 large crockpots—one for each chicken strainer.

 

Directions:

Put the chicken pieces in cold water and sprinkle generously with salt and let sit for 30 minutes—this helps pull the blood out of the chicken.  Drain and rinse.

Add chicken and the rest of the ingredients to a large pot(s) of gently boiling water—return to a gentle boil and turn down to a simmer.  Simmer for 35 minutes. 

Remove all of the chicken pieces, cool enough to handle and remove the chicken meat from the bones.  Reserve chicken (I freeze it).   Return everything else from the chicken—everything-- to the pot (or put into 2 crockpots) and heat until it just begins to boil.  Turn down the heat on the stove to maintain a constant simmer.  If your using a crockpot(s), you can cook on “high” to keep it simmering and help reduce the cooking time.  If you are cooking overnight, put it on low and then raise it in the morning when you are able to check on it. 

Cook for 8-12 hours.  Strain the broth and let it cool.  Then refrigerate it so that you can collect the fat that rises to the top.  You can freeze the fat for cooking later and consume the broth.  The broth will be gelatinous when cold and liquid when heated. 

 

Consuming

Add 2-3 TBSP of local grass-fed butter or coconut oil to about 10 oz of broth and consume.  You should also add some Himalayan/sea salt to taste.

NOTE:  it is important that the bones are cooking the entire time.  If they are just “warming”, they are not cooking.  You need them to cook to release their minerals, gelatin and collagen.  You will also need to add water during the cooking time as it will evaporate.  Chicken bone broth smells good in the house—beef does not.

How To Make Organic Bone Broth - Grass-Fed Beef Recipe

Ingredients:

8-10 Beef bones—cut into 2.5-3” lengths—they need to be small enough to demineralize within 48-72 hours of cooking time

8 bay leaves

garlic powder to taste

onion powder to taste

4-8 peppercorns

1 TBSP ea salt or Himalayan salt

3-6 TBSP organic raw apple cider vinegar (Braggs is good)

clean water:  enough to fill several large crockpots ¾ full, plus extra in reserve to add during cooking.

 

Equipment:

2 large crockpots

strainer

Directions:

Fill 2 crockpots ¾ full with water.  Add all ingredients, splitting them between the two pots.  Adjust the water level to the highest the pot will allow (approximately ¾ full) considering it will “bubble” a bit.  Put it on “high” and bring the water to a boil/simmer. 

Keep the pots on high if they are gently cooking and it will speed up the cooking time BUT only keep it on high if you can check every hour or so.  Otherwise, put on next lowest setting. 

Cook for 48-72 hours—strain the broth and cool.   Then refrigerate so that you can collect the fat that rises to the top.  You can freeze the fat for cooking later and consume the broth.  The broth will be gelatinous when cold and liquid when heated.

NOTE:  it is important that the bones are cooking the entire time.  If they are just “warming”, they are not cooking.  You need them to cook to release their minerals, gelatin and collagen.  You will also need to add water during the cooking time as it will evaporate.  After 24 hours of cooking, the beef bones will begin to break down.  They need to cook a minimum of 48 hours, preferably 60-72 hours, to receive maximum benefit from the broth.  Do not cook beyond 72 hours.
